THE WOMAN BEHIND SANDRA KAY'S BAKERY

     Sandra grew up in Bridgman, Michigan in a large family that knows about the importance of hard work maintaining a blueberry farm. Today, that strong work ethic has gotten her a well earned spot among the best bakeries in Southwest Michigan. Sandra graduated from Lake Michigan College with a degree in food service in the late 70’s.

     She worked in many restaurants and learned a lot about many aspects of food preparation and service. In 1990, after being married 8 years and starting a family, Sandra decided to open a bakery after finding she had a talent for creating homemade pastries.

     With an investment of $25 for a commercial oven purchased from a local auction, she started a small bakery out of their garage. She began selling baked goods to friends, family, and neighbors, then, by word of mouth, they began supplying the area’s finer restaurants and caterers with delicious deserts.

     Soon the business outgrew the small garage and had to move locations. With the land they bought in 1987 originally as an investment, they built a 3,070 square foot building on the southwest corner of John Beers and Hollywood Road in Royalton Township.

     At first, people were asking,”why did you build out in the middle of nowhere?" But Sandra said that everything would soon move out there- and they were right. As the medical park down the road keeps expanding, more people are discovering Sandra Kay’s homemade baked goods and desserts.

The Ingredients

SEASONAL FARM TO TABLE FOOD SELECTIONS 

If you look around on your drive out to our bakery, you'll notice that you're in farm country. Southwest Michigan proudly shows off their fresh fruit and vegetables between summer and fall and with a background in family farming, you bet we use the freshest of ingredients during the seasonal growing months. 

Fruit pies? We use fruit from farms within a 5 mile radius of our property. Fresh rhubarb straight from Totzke Farm's fields. Fresh berries and peaches from Mick Klug Farm and Vergot Farms. 

Soup and sandwiches? Fresh tomatoes, basil, peppers, cabbage, zucchini and so much more come from either the garden right outside the bakery or from Vergot Farms down the road.
